And so it begins..

Day 1 - September 11, 2009

After a terrifying drive from JFK (where we spent the night) through Manhattan and on, into New Jersey...

Took this photo at 8.30am.. It seriously should've had BIG flashing neon below it reading DANGER AHEAD!
I now understand the meaning of "white-knuckle" driving. Even the lady's voice on Sat Nav sounded stressed out.

... We hit the tranquility of the Pennsylvania border and drove for 3 hours in pouring rain through some of the most beautiful country (think Deer Hunter ((in the hunting scene)) meets Deliverance)

Hitting our destination of State College around 1.30pm

We walked around the Penn State campus for a couple of hours in the pouring rain, before finding shelter (albeit random, as it just happened to be next to a convenience store that sold postcards.. speaking of random, the clerk at the convenience store was wearing an Australia tourist shirt!!) at Bill Pickle's Tap Room for -

Impromptu Lunch

Bill Pickles Cheese Steak
(think Harveys Spiced Mince on a hotdog bun
or North Bondi Italian Polpette Panini.. delicious!)
with
Troegs Draught
recommended as "something local" by the bartender
Brewed nearby in Harrisburg PA. He said we were a month too early and should come back in October next visit when they release Mad Elf Ale. He says that all of their "seasonal" beers are really good.
This was the best beer brewed in the US that I have ever tasted.
